THE METAXAS TAPE PROJECT
I've had a lot of interest from Audiophiles who have acquired open reel tape recorders for copies of my Master Tapes recorded on my Stellavox SM8. So I'm currently working on a list of concerts which I'll be able to offer first generation copies. If you are interested in purchasing copies of these tapes, please contact me by email [metaxas at netspace.net.au] for a full listing. The price will be AUS$490 for a 2 X 33min tape concert [plus $60 shipping] or AUS$290 for a 33min concert tape [plus $40 shipping]. There will be discounts available if you purchase a minimum of 10 concerts. I'm only going to dub a maximum of 10 copies from a Master Tape.
LOCATION RECORDING SHOOTOUT
METAXAS vs NAGRA 6
The venue is the Melbourne Town Hall during the rehearsal of Handel's "Messiah" [Dec 2009]. I'm using a pair of Neumann TLM50s [Titanium capsule] in XY configuration behind and above the conductor's head and a pair of Neumann TLM50s [Nickel capsule] in AB approx 6 metres apart and 2 metres behind the XY pair. Cables are Van Den Hul "MIC HYBRID". The four channels are connected to the Metaxas Mixer or channels 1-4 of the NAGRA 6 which has been set up by the Nagra dealer. I used ch5&6 to connect the Metaxas mixer to the NAGRA to compare the ADCs.

With a good reference system you should easily be able to hear the richer, deeper, wider and more "analogue" sound of the Metaxas equipment. Instruments and singers have more presence and dimensionality.
It's taken me over 200+ concerts to develop my equipment to this level of "analogue realism" and I still get surprised when I hear the offerings of professional companies such as NAGRA, PRISM, GENEX etc, which fall far short of the standards in sound reproduction of the 1950's-60's. You can easily hear their shortcomings in current recordings made with them.
